The Kremlin Gate, Moscow, Russia, 1998The great red-walled Kremlin is the core of Moscow, and of all Russia. In front of Resurrection Gate, the entrance to Red Square, is the zero-kilometer mark by which all distances are measured. The enormous gate and its tiny companion, an 18th-century chapel that looks like a child's playhouse, are recent restorations: The originals were destroyed so that Stalin could drive his tanks into the square for parades.

Sciacca, ItalyLittle man in a big world, eight-year-old Calogero Amoroso shows off his double-breasted best for a wedding in Sciacca. Once known for its large families, Italy now has the industrialized world's lowest birthrate. Sicily's rate, though higher than that of the nation as a whole, has fallen by almost half since 1950. Sicilian women today have an average of 1.7 children.

Ginnie Springs, Florida, 1998Deep within the complex web of Florida's aquifers, a diver releases dye in the crystal clear waters of Ginnie Springs to determine the path of the current. Unlike deep sea diving, where depth and uncontrolled ascent are the great dangers, the peril of cave diving is disorientation. The currents swirling between tunnels and caves don't always lead back to open water.

ThailandMembers of a refugee Burmese tribe in Thailand, a Padaung family bathes in a stream. Padaung women are often fitted with brass neck rings. These rings help elongate their necks—a look prized among this group—albeit at the expense of crushed collarbones and rib cages.
